National Radiologic Technology Week 2024

National Radiologic Technology Week takes place during the week of Nov. 8 each year to celebrate the discovery of the x-ray and the vital work of radiographers across the country. The Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences program at the University of South Alabama provides students with enhanced career opportunities in radiology as administrators, educators and advanced imaging specialists.
In celebration of National Radiologic Technology Week, we are highlighting three students
from South鈥檚 radiologic sciences program. Let鈥檚 get to know Azaria Crutcher-Vasquez,
Jennifer Do and Olivia Overstreet!
Azaria Crutcher-Vasquez

Where are you from?
鈥淗untsville, Alabama鈥
Why do you want to be a radiographer?
鈥淚 have a desire to contribute to healthcare and help patients. My love for the healthcare
field has been eternal and a calling since I was child. A chance to work closely with
a diverse range of patients and healthcare professionals is a blessing itself. I aspire
to make a difference in someone鈥檚 life and being a radiographer gives me an opportunity
to make this happen.鈥
What modality or modalities are you specializing in?
鈥淩adiation Therapy鈥
What led you to choose South?
鈥淚t was the only university in the entire state of Alabama that credits you a bachelor鈥檚
degree. It鈥檚 an instate university as well. The radiologic sciences program has so
much to offer besides x-ray.鈥
What has your experience been like as a student at South?
鈥淚t has been very welcoming, and I鈥檝e made some really great friends in this program.鈥
What do you like to do outside of class and studying?
鈥淚 love to read books and travel whenever I get the opportunity. I enjoy cuddling
and playing with my dog Ashton. On rainy days, I love being cozy and watching Vampire
Diaries.鈥
What are your plans after graduation?
鈥淚 plan to either go home and work for a couple of years in Huntsville at a cancer
center, or explore opportunities in Texas or the Washington, D.C. area.鈥
What advice would you offer to future radiologic sciences students?
鈥淲hen times get hard, remember why you decided to go into radiology in the first place.鈥
What is a fun fact about yourself?
鈥淚鈥檓 an adventurous eater and am always down for new experiences!鈥

Where are you from?
鈥淚rvington, Alabama鈥
Why do you want to be a radiographer?
鈥淚 believe radiography is a very rewarding career. It gives me the opportunity to
make a difference in the lives of others. It's amazing to know that I could do something
to contribute to bettering someone's health. Also, I really enjoy working with technology,
and it is fascinating to see how it can be used to advance healthcare.鈥
What modality or modalities are you specializing in?
鈥淢搁滨鈥
What led you to choose South?
鈥淕oing to South meant that I could stay close to my family, which was very important
to me. I love how the radiologic sciences program at USA is so unique because it allows
students to choose from so many different modalities for their senior year. I really
like that the program is not rushed, therefore students can take time to develop skills
and obtain a thorough knowledge of medical imaging.鈥
What has your experience been like as a student at South?
鈥淚 greatly enjoy being a student at South because the instructors are always very
kind and willing to help. I know that the instructors truly care about every student
and desire for everyone to be the best they can be.鈥
What do you like to do outside of class and studying?
鈥淚 really love to spend time with my family.鈥
What are your plans after graduation?
鈥淚 would like to stay in Mobile and work as an MRI tech.鈥
What advice would you offer to future radiologic sciences students?
鈥淚 think it's important to always give your best effort and know that it will always
be worth it.鈥
What is a fun fact about yourself?
鈥淚 am bilingual in English and Vietnamese.鈥
Olivia Overstreet

Where are you from?
鈥淕rove Hill, Alabama鈥
Why do you want to be a radiographer?
鈥淚 love working one on one with each patient, and I also love how ultrasound is a
very hands-on modality!鈥
What modality or modalities are you specializing in?
鈥淯濒迟谤补蝉辞耻苍诲鈥
What led you to choose South?
鈥淏oth of my sisters attended South and loved it. It was close to home, but not too
far away!鈥
What has your experience been like as a student at South?
鈥淢y experience has been great! I love South and especially love the radiology program
here!鈥
What do you like to do outside of class and studying?
鈥淚 enjoy golfing with my fianc茅 and going shopping or cooking with my sisters!鈥
What are your plans after graduation?
鈥淚 plan to get a job here in Mobile!鈥
What advice would you offer to future radiologic sciences students?
鈥淢y advice is to study hard and keep pursuing your goals but also to enjoy your college
experience!鈥
What is a fun fact about yourself?
鈥淎 fun fact about me is that on our first day of scanning in ultrasound, we found
out I have a kidney stone! We named her Kendra.鈥
